A trader made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the event.
Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be out of power by the month's conclusion increased in the period preceding President Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.
One account, which became a member in December and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a initial bet of $32,537.
It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Trading information shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
Yet these probabilities had increased to 11% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the first hours of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity right before the public announcement was made.
"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a bet based on inside information," said an industry expert.
A small number of other individuals also earned significant sums from bets on the same outcome.
Some lawmakers are starting to take note.
Proposed legislation presented on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from sports outcomes to politics.
The industry were examined under the Biden administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market space.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
